Having spoken to a number of people today, at the West Ham match, I have generally found that the red logo is completely out of favour. There is a strong rumour that if the red logo appears on our shirts a boycott of all merchandise carrying the logo will be swiftly arranged. Brian Gardner
Paul,
In response to your mail, regarding our new 'lucrative' sponsorship, I do have the following comments to make;
How lucrative was this deal?
Was the money they earned from the deal, enough to balance the losses they will incur from lack of sales of home shirts?
It would have been far better had glib comments, which attempted to trivialise the situation, not been made at the launch.
I think the situation has been handled poorly and unprofessionally.
I also think that both the club, and Thomson have been very naive in their whole approach to the deal- whilst understanding that the company markets itself in red- it would have been far better to have taken into account the history and tradition of the club it wishes to associate itself with. How positively we would have responded, if their attitude would have been along the lines of 'tailoring our logo to suit the needs of the fans and our future customers! We would have been impressed with their sensitivity and responded very favourably, I'm sure. Directing us to purchase away shirts is a kop out. Many people will be so angered by this situation that they will purchase NEITHER shirt.
I'm not unaware of the difficulty in procuring valuable sponsorship deals, and realise this is a major need, financially, to any football club, but I do object to the underlying attitude, that WE should be grateful to the company for agreeing to be our sponsors. They should be equally as thankful to us, for displaying their name on our shirt. We are not a tin pot club - we are Tottenham Hotspur, and perhaps we should start believing in our worth a bit more.
I do feel a massive error has been made here, and I think the club will soon realise this when they review their income from shirt sales, and merchandise in general. Football is big business now, and any business should listen to the needs and requirements of their customers. To ignore them is a risky road to travel down.
I find it hard to digest, that a board who constantly state they have the best interests of the club at heart, could not foresee this backlash - they are supposed to be supporters. On the whole - Spurs supporters 'Don't Do Red'

Dear Paul
The game now appears to be dominated by sponsorship deals, multi-million pound transfers and live television deals. A far cry from the days of brown leather balls, sportsmanship, games on Saturday at 3.00.pm. I am showing my age again (my first game 1958).
It appears whoever comes up with the most money can dictate the terms. I wonder if we can get a with "Red-Bull" as I've heard nothing but that for years now from the other side of N.London.
Perhaps we can limit the size of the letters or even better put a navy blue circle around the red.
Regards

PS. Keep up the excellent work you're doing for the Trust
Hello Paul,
To be honest mate I am very very disappointed with this situation. My opinion is ENIC should have insisted upon this sponsor being blue (or even black). This is a very petty issue and in the grand scheme of getting spurs back to the top where we belong- is irrelevant. But, if the board of directors claim to be spurs fans and to honest I am questioning that very fact, I think they will understand our position. The kit looks very nice, I happen to think it is allot more stylish than the Adidas kits, but who can deny that the red sponsor ruins it. It looks cheap and tacky. We do not want anything in or around our club associated with the colour red! I am personally offended by this move by the board, especially as I have taken so much of my time and energy associating myself with the trust. I think that ENIC are using the trust for PR purposes. I do not think they will actually use the trust for making and decisions worthwhile talking about. Lets face it they have a YES / No thing on the website should fans smoke in the ground? Surely if they valued the trust they would have asked you guys, instead they use the website as it can be fiddled if they don't get the result they want.
The fact that we have 1000 signatures in a petition against this sponsor shows we mean business and ENIC have created themselves more unnecessary negative press. They are in for a big shock this summer if they don't back Glenn financially and they are doing themselves no favours by creating negative vibes pre to the summer.
I would have allot of respect for ENIC if they were to rectify this situation and it would give everyone a 'feel good' factor going into the summer. Thomson's would also generate some positive press as they would be showing excellent customer service (something they don't provide currently!) it would be a 'all win' situation if this red sponsor be changed.
One last point, I would imagine Kappa will be unhappy with the negative press regarding their new kit, I think Kappa have done a wonderful job with this kit, but due to the red sponsor I will not be buying it, like several thousand spurs fans I suspect.
Kind regards
Alex Clayton
